Fixing a broken plot

Sometimes, it's easy to keep writing without any sense of direction, and let the story evolve as you go along. That generally works for a few pages, though. Pretty soon, if you're writing genre fiction, you run smack into the cold hard reality of Plot.

For NaNoWriMo 2010, I tried my best to have an outline ready before November, and actually succeeded. It wasn't perfect, but I thought it would help me move the story along.

Unfortunately, when it came time to write my draft, the characters took over and I deviated from the outline substantially. The plot is a mess, and I'm slowly trying to straighten it out. In spite of the extra effort it caused, my deviation from the outline spawned a few new ideas that will definitely make it into the next draft.

I'm getting closer to having the plot make sense, but I'm not there yet.
